Drugstore Skincare Routine for Acne Prone/Problem Skin

January 9, 2017 in Beauty, Uncategorized - No Comments

Skincare can be so selective. What works for one person won’t always work for someone else. That’s why it’s super important to know what skin type you have, as well as whether or not you have any skin conditions. I’ve always had a normal-ish skin type, but very dehydrated. You can read more about dehydrated skin here, and I also explain the difference between a skin type and a skin condition. I’m sharing a new skin care routine today that has really helped me.

Having relatively clear skin throughout my entire life, including my teenage years, I guess that Mother Nature decided I was due for some adult acne.

After doing a bit of reading up on adult acne, I realized that it can occur frequently in women my age. Fluctuating hormone levels is one of the main causes of onset adult acne. (Hellooooo pregnancy and giving birth!)  Stress is also a factor when it comes to acne flare-ups, and I’ve got no shortage of that around here.

My skin had been horrendous for the last year or so, and finally a few months ago I went searching for something to help the problem. I had to change my skin care routine, because everything that I was doing wasn’t working.

Being a mom on a budget, I hit up Target like always and struck gold!

Shea Moisture! Where have you been all my life?

These products came in a set. I’m not entirely sure if it was just for the Holidays or if they’re always sold in a set, but I purchased all of these products for $19.99! Right? I know.
I will be the first person to admit that I am a complete skincare snob, and I totally blame all of my years spent at Sephora. So, while I was skeptical, I was desperate. This mama definitely doesn’t have the money to be spending $80 for one moisturizer and $50 for one cleanser anymore.

Inside this kit you receive:

African Black Soap Problem Skin Facial Wash & Scrub gently exfoliates and cleanses while helping to control breakouts. Helps absorb excess oil and detoxify skin. Leaves skin refreshed and clearer looking.

I use this scrub once a week, when I remember, as a deep exfoliating and cleansing wash. I prefer the bar soap to this because it doesn’t create as much of a lather as the bar. This is a great product though to get deep down into your pores to clear them out and prevent any breakouts.

African Black Soap Acne Prone Face & Body Bar

shea moisture “The African Black Soap Bar is designed to cleanse, hydrate and calm problem skin. Helps to balance oily skin for a clearer complexion. Use daily. Made with natural and certified organic ingredients.”

This is by far one of the best facial soaps that I have tried. I love that it has little grains in it (perfect for exfoliating). It took me quite a while to pinpoint what it smells like, but I finally got it. Have y’all ever tried Lush Cosmetics? They have a special line of products that only comes out for the Holidays. There’s a body wash called Snow Fairy, and to me, it smells just like that. I did not expect such a sweet and bubblegum scent to come from a black bar of soap. It definitely took me by surprise.
I use this bar twice a day–once in the morning and once at night. It’s gentle enough to be used daily, and my skin has improved so much in the almost three months that I’ve been using it. Not only did my acne improve, the texture of my skin feels a lot smoother. It’s also great at removing makeup! If you remove your makeup with it though, make sure to do a second cleanse to actually clean your skin. (I imagine it would also be amazing for those who have body acne, since it is a facial and body bar).

FullSizeRender (83)“African Black Soap Problem Skin Moisturizer helps keep problem skin hydrated, while balancing oily and blemished complexions. Leaves a smooth, shine-free finish. Excellent under make-up.”

As I said earlier, hydration is one of my biggest issues! When your skin is dehydrated, it can look dull and lifeless. I use this twice a day as well, right after I cleanse with the facial bar. There isn’t a smell to this that I’ve noticed, so it’s either very light or there isn’t one. It leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized without feeling cakey. One of my pet peeves when it comes to facial moisturizers is when you apply it and your skin feels like it can’t breathe. I work too damn hard to unclog my pores to have some thick cream just clog them right back up.

shea moisture“This clarifying mask draws out dirt and congestion while helping absorb excess oil and improve the appearance of troubled skin. A proprietary blend of African Black Soap and Raw Shea Butter helps to clarify, balance and soothe blemish-prone skin. Skin feels purified and refreshed.”

This stuff was weird! I mean that in the best way possible. Initially, I saw it expecting some kind of a drying charcoal mask. Because, since it looks like all of the other charcoal masks, why would I expect anything different right? WRONG. This is a soft, smooth mask that doesn’t dry to a flaky finish. It actually feels like applying moisturizer. Surprising, in a good way. I use this mask once a week, typically towards the end of the week, to really pull out all of the junk from my pores. My skin feels so smooth and refreshed afterwards.

skin care routineAll in all, I love my new skin care routine. It has targeted every single issue that I’ve been having with my skin over the last year and a half. Shea Moisture has a few different lines of skin care based on concerns you may have. They cover everything including dark spots, anti-aging, dry skin, and of course the problem/acne prone skin. Every time I was at Target, I would peruse their products but I never purchased anything until now, and I’m totally glad that I finally did. I’m excited to try their Super Fruit products, among other things.
It feels good to know that I don’t have to break the bank or sacrifice my family’s budget to do a little bit of self-care. Finally there’s something affordable out there for everyone to try!

What are your skin care concerns and what products do you use to treat them?
Have you tried Shea Moisture before? What were your thoughts!

Let me know in the comments!

*I purchased all of these products with my own money, and I was not compensated in any way to provide my feedback on them. Shea Moisture has absolutely no idea who I am. Promise.*

This is a yearly event that they put on for all of the families and it’s amazing! Lots of rides, prizes, food, and fun treats. We had a blast. ⠀
I may have went overboard with the free burgers today. I’m a sucker for a really good burger off the grill. Anyone else? ⠀
Full Disclosure: My Ennegram 6 came out hard when Grayson wanted to ride the Ferris Wheel.⠀
I was almost hoping that 1. We could talk him out of it, or 2. My husband would be too tall to ride it with him. I was so nervous about how he would react. ⠀
What if he tried to get down?⠀
What if he was so scared and I wasn’t up there with him?⠀
But, I learned a lesson today. ⠀
I have to learn to trust my boy. He *knew* he wanted to ride it, and he loved it! ⠀

  • Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. I didn’t always openly share about my struggles over the years with my own mental health. I always steered the conversation towards how important it was for anyone struggling to reach out, ask for help, share their story, whatever they felt comfortable doing. Ending the Stigma.⠀
But me? Oh no, I was to embarrassed to admit that I was also struggling. ⠀
I never really noticed a change in my mental health until *after* I became a mother. Post-Partum (and situational—my husband and I were just in a bad place financially, in our marriage, etc) Depression really got the best of me after I gave birth to my son. I slept all the time, picked stupid fights with my husband, and at times just genuinely didn’t want to be alive. Thought that I was a horrible mother. Thankfully after struggling for what felt like forever, those feelings went away. ⠀
Going into my second pregnancy and remembering just how badly that PPD had gotten, spiraled me into a new feeling—anxiety. And that feeling hasn’t really gone away. ⠀
I have really really great days, more good than bad and I am so grateful for that. But there are days where I feel my overwhelm and anxiety physically crushing me. Being able to speak up about it, communicate my needs to my partner, *and* find support and solace in wonderful women who are going through the same has been my saving grace. ⠀
Sure, Instagram is often filled with really beautiful curated images—and don’t mistake my words here, I love and enjoy scrolling these beautiful feeds; but it’s also important to remember that it isn’t always beautiful and well planned all of the time. There are real people behind these beautiful photos. ⠀
Life can also be messy. Embrace the mess. ⠀
(Inspiration for this post today comes from two beautiful Moms that I follow and love, who consistently advocate for Mental Health Awareness- @thegarciadiaries and @arynhinton). ⠀
Scroll all the way through for a silly outtake of the first image. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Oh, Sawyer. Lol. ⠀

  • Do you have a house full of snackers? #AD Whether you have a toddler or a preschooler @beechnutfoods Toddler Snacks (their Fruity Oat Bars specifically) are some of our favorite Grab N Go snacks! They contain only 5 *REAL* Ingredients and no artificial preservatives (Whole Grain Oats, Raisins, Dates, Sunflower Oil, and Dried Strawberries or Bananas—depending on which you get). The kids absolutely love them, and I feel pretty great giving them these whenever they ask for one.
I also love sneaking Beech-Nut® Naturals purees into their food to make sure they’re getting enough servings of veggies a day too.
What are your kid’s favorite snacks? •

Are y’all celebrating? We had tacos for dinner a few nights ago, but I’m pretty sure we need to have them again. What’s your favorite kind of taco? And what’s your must have topping? I *love* and have to have cheese, raw onions, lettuce, avocado, salt and pepper and tapatio on my beef tacos. •

  • I missed National Son Day yesterday...that was my bad. I typically don’t realize it’s a “national ___ day” unless someone tells me. 😅😅 This kid loves so hard, feels things so big, and oftentimes frustrates the mess out of me.
He’s at that age where he’s testing lots of boundaries and realizing he doesn’t want to do everything he’s told, he’s learning to use his voice and while I LOVE that it’s some times challenging for me.
I’ve had days where I’m harder on him that I should be, and days where I feel like I’ve coddled him too much.
Watching him grow into his personality and have likes and dislikes, and big strong opinions is amazing to watch. He’s funny, he’s goofy, he’s sensitive, he’s stubborn, and he’s oh so smart. He still loves cars and dinosaurs, and has taken up a love of baking. (Halloween Baking Championship is his favorite show). And even though he and I butt heads some times, I can’t even put into words the love that I feel for my first born.
After all, like he tells me all the time “You made me in your tummy and grew me special!” 🥰🥰

  • I have the weirdest question y’all... My kids LOVE fruit, like, they’re obsessed. They eat some with almost every meal, they like it as a snack, etc etc.
Mostly though, they love Summertime fruits like watermelon, strawberries, actually all of the berries really.
As we get closer to Fall and Winter, I’ve found my strawberry selection at the grocery store is...just not great.
So....what are some of your kid’s faves? (We get berries, bananas and apples WEEKLY. Grayson likes bananas and apples but Sawyer seems to only like strawberries. And we don’t do a ton of citrus because we’re mildly allergic to it when it touches our skin—though we do love it!)
