Toddlers are so much fun. They’re at that age where they’re wanting to learn and explore everything! They want to be included, and they also have these amazing minds that need shaping. Imaginations that need the ability to run wild, and creativity that should flow out daily.

I’m always looking for things that Grayson and I can do together. Whether it’s a new craft indoors, or going off an a new adventure away from home. When I was his age, I remember my mom always had things for me to do. If we needed to stay inside, I worked on a skill (letters, colors, etc.) or did a craft. Oftentimes, she took me to the library for Story Time. Keeping him continuously busy allows for his mind to keep learning, and it makes for a ridiculously easy bed time routine later.

This weekend, I spent my Mother’s Day making homemade Playdough. One reason I like the idea of an all-natural playdough is that I can control the ingredients, that’s important to me. Toddlers are known to sneak a little taste of new and exciting things that look like they could be food, and I don’t want him snacking on the store-bought stuff.
DIYALLNATURALPLAYDOUGHDIYALLNATURALPLAYDOUGHPlaydough also gives us the ability to practice things like shapes, colors, and sharing– while working on fine motor skills. Have them practice by making their own shapes in the dough, using either cookie cutters or blocks, and then have them identify the shape. We lined them up, and I would ask him “Where is the square?” “Where is the triangle?” Also, you can make the shape in various colors and ask them to point out the color specific shape: “Where is the yellow star?”

I find that if he’s playing and having a good time, he is more receptive to learning something new and answering my questions. I call this “sneak attack learning”. Ha!

He held up the yellow dough and said “NANA!” Which, if you know him, this kid is obsessed with bananas. I was afraid he was going to try and take a bite, but while it wouldn’t taste very good, it’s safe to consume.
We had such a fun time making and playing with our All-Natural Playdough, and I want to share the recipe so that y’all can make it with your kids! This recipe is so easy, and it’s a great way to get the kids involved in the process. It’s great for rainy days, or in this case Southern Summer Days where it’s too hot to go outside if you like being able to breathe.

DIY ALL-NATURAL PLAYDOUGH

INGREDIENTS:

DIYALLNATURALPLAYDOUGH

  • 4 C All-Purpose Flour
  • 4 C Water
  • 1 C Salt
  • 4 TBSP Coconut Oil
  • 4 TBSP Cream of Tartar
  • 1-2 TBSP Spinach, Turmeric, Hibiscus, Beet, and Cocoa Powders (to color the playdough naturally)
  • 2-3 Drops of Kid-Friendly Essential Oil (Optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Combine all of your ingredients into a bowl, and add to pot of water.

DIYALLNATURALPLAYDOUGH

  • Stirring continuously, cook on medium heat until mixture starts to pull away from the sides of the pot.

DIYALLNATURALPLAYDOUGH

  • Place the dough onto a floured surface and let cool for several minutes.
  • Once it’s warm enough to touch, knead the dough and form balls–this batch gave me 6 large sized balls.

DIYALLNATURALPLAYDOUGH

  • When using powders to color the dough naturally, you’ll want to work with it while it’s still warm.
  • Push a dent into your dough for the powders to go, and add 1-2 TBSP –use more for a richer color.

DIYALLNATURALPLAYDOUGHDIYALLNATURALPLAYDOUGH

  • Fold each ball over onto itself, and knead until the color is fully incorporated. (This part got a little messy, for me, but it was Mother’s Day so I didn’t have to clean it up!)
  • This is also the time that you would add in your Kid-Friendly Essential Oils. We didn’t do it for this batch, but will in the future. Lavender and Chamomile would be a great to add because of their calming effects, as would Grapefruit and Sweet Orange which promote an energized mind that’s ready to focus. Obviously, don’t put them together! Make two different batches using the oils mentioned.

Can you believe how beautiful and rich these colors are? I absolutely love it!

NOTES:

  • Seal these puppies up in an airtight container and they will last you about 2-3 weeks. If you refrigerate them, double that!
  • You can use all kinds of items to color your dough naturally–check the spice aisle of your local supermarket, see what you can find.
  • All-Natural Playdough would make a great gift! Super fun, and inexpensive!

Once you’ve finished your All-Natural Playdough, you might possibly be a complete mess like I was. Flour was everywhere. It’s time to clean up! Thankfully, since we used all-natural ingredients, all of our clothes will wash good as new.

As you all know, I’ve been working on changing the way that I run my household. I’ve found several sulfate free options when it comes to our hair care and body care products, and it seemed pretty natural that when given the choice to go sulfate free with our laundry, I would do that as well. I’ve found myself reaching for all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS™ regularly. The NEW sulfate free all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® delivers a powerful clean without harshness.

  • A Peek into Our Saturday Afternoon and Family Day at my husband’s job.⠀
⠀
This is a yearly event that they put on for all of the families and it’s amazing! Lots of rides, prizes, food, and fun treats. We had a blast. ⠀
⠀
I may have went overboard with the free burgers today. I’m a sucker for a really good burger off the grill. Anyone else? ⠀
⠀
Full Disclosure: My Ennegram 6 came out hard when Grayson wanted to ride the Ferris Wheel.⠀
⠀
I was almost hoping that 1. We could talk him out of it, or 2. My husband would be too tall to ride it with him. I was so nervous about how he would react. ⠀
What if he tried to get down?⠀
What if he was so scared and I wasn’t up there with him?⠀
⠀
But, I learned a lesson today. ⠀
I have to learn to trust my boy. He *knew* he wanted to ride it, and he loved it! ⠀
Slowly loosening my reigns on him. Reluctantly... 🤣🤣⠀

  • Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. I didn’t always openly share about my struggles over the years with my own mental health. I always steered the conversation towards how important it was for anyone struggling to reach out, ask for help, share their story, whatever they felt comfortable doing. Ending the Stigma.⠀
⠀
But me? Oh no, I was to embarrassed to admit that I was also struggling. ⠀
⠀
I never really noticed a change in my mental health until *after* I became a mother. Post-Partum (and situational—my husband and I were just in a bad place financially, in our marriage, etc) Depression really got the best of me after I gave birth to my son. I slept all the time, picked stupid fights with my husband, and at times just genuinely didn’t want to be alive. Thought that I was a horrible mother. Thankfully after struggling for what felt like forever, those feelings went away. ⠀
⠀
Going into my second pregnancy and remembering just how badly that PPD had gotten, spiraled me into a new feeling—anxiety. And that feeling hasn’t really gone away. ⠀
⠀
I have really really great days, more good than bad and I am so grateful for that. But there are days where I feel my overwhelm and anxiety physically crushing me. Being able to speak up about it, communicate my needs to my partner, *and* find support and solace in wonderful women who are going through the same has been my saving grace. ⠀
⠀
Sure, Instagram is often filled with really beautiful curated images—and don’t mistake my words here, I love and enjoy scrolling these beautiful feeds; but it’s also important to remember that it isn’t always beautiful and well planned all of the time. There are real people behind these beautiful photos. ⠀
⠀
Life can also be messy. Embrace the mess. ⠀
⠀
(Inspiration for this post today comes from two beautiful Moms that I follow and love, who consistently advocate for Mental Health Awareness- @thegarciadiaries and @arynhinton). ⠀
⠀
Scroll all the way through for a silly outtake of the first image. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Oh, Sawyer. Lol. ⠀

  • Do you have a house full of snackers? #AD Whether you have a toddler or a preschooler @beechnutfoods Toddler Snacks (their Fruity Oat Bars specifically) are some of our favorite Grab N Go snacks! They contain only 5 *REAL* Ingredients and no artificial preservatives (Whole Grain Oats, Raisins, Dates, Sunflower Oil, and Dried Strawberries or Bananas—depending on which you get). The kids absolutely love them, and I feel pretty great giving them these whenever they ask for one.
I also love sneaking Beech-Nut® Naturals purees into their food to make sure they’re getting enough servings of veggies a day too.
What are your kid’s favorite snacks? •

  • Today is #NationalTacoDay 🌮🌮🌮
Are y’all celebrating? We had tacos for dinner a few nights ago, but I’m pretty sure we need to have them again. What’s your favorite kind of taco? And what’s your must have topping? I *love* and have to have cheese, raw onions, lettuce, avocado, salt and pepper and tapatio on my beef tacos. •

  • I missed National Son Day yesterday...that was my bad. I typically don’t realize it’s a “national ___ day” unless someone tells me. 😅😅 This kid loves so hard, feels things so big, and oftentimes frustrates the mess out of me.
He’s at that age where he’s testing lots of boundaries and realizing he doesn’t want to do everything he’s told, he’s learning to use his voice and while I LOVE that it’s some times challenging for me.
I’ve had days where I’m harder on him that I should be, and days where I feel like I’ve coddled him too much.
Watching him grow into his personality and have likes and dislikes, and big strong opinions is amazing to watch. He’s funny, he’s goofy, he’s sensitive, he’s stubborn, and he’s oh so smart. He still loves cars and dinosaurs, and has taken up a love of baking. (Halloween Baking Championship is his favorite show). And even though he and I butt heads some times, I can’t even put into words the love that I feel for my first born.
After all, like he tells me all the time “You made me in your tummy and grew me special!” 🥰🥰

  • I have the weirdest question y’all... My kids LOVE fruit, like, they’re obsessed. They eat some with almost every meal, they like it as a snack, etc etc.
Mostly though, they love Summertime fruits like watermelon, strawberries, actually all of the berries really.
As we get closer to Fall and Winter, I’ve found my strawberry selection at the grocery store is...just not great.
So....what are some of your kid’s faves? (We get berries, bananas and apples WEEKLY. Grayson likes bananas and apples but Sawyer seems to only like strawberries. And we don’t do a ton of citrus because we’re mildly allergic to it when it touches our skin—though we do love it!)
