Caitlin’s Cheese Ball (Sweet and Savory Hawaiian Cheese Ball)

Something that my friends and I really enjoy doing together is meal planning. Every week, we ask what everyone is making their families for dinner. We either completely copy each other or draw inspiration from one another. The same goes for Holiday Food! My good friend, Caitlin, shared this cheese ball with us last year and I have been obsessed ever since. We had a really fun Mom’s Day out at Board and Brush in Nashville, and she brought it– I was hooked. I ended up making it the next week, and even as a Thanksgiving appetizer last year. I’m going to share this recipe with y’all today because it’s really easy to whip together, and the flavors pair perfectly together.

Caitlin has been making this recipe for like 10 years, way longer than I’ve known her. She can’t remember where she found it (so if you know the original author, please let me know!) But, my friends and I just call this Caitlin’s Cheese Ball. They’re just as obsessed with it as I am.

Some comments that I heard when making this and shooting this pictures “Is that CAITLIN’S CHEESE BALL?” “That’s THE cheese ball!” Haha. It’s just that good.

Ingredients

  • 2 8oz Blocks Cream Cheese, softened at room temperature
  • 5-6 Slices of thin cut deli ham (I use Boar’s Head Tavern Ham for this because it’s my favorite)
  • 1 Bunch of Green Onions, Chopped Thin
  • 1/2 Large Can *Crushed* Pineapple, Drained VERY well. Draining this well will make or break the cheese ball
  • 1/3 C Powdered Sugar
  • 1 Small bag of Crushed Pecans–or your nut of choice.
  • (To turn this little guy into a turkey for Thanksgiving, I used Black Olives for his eyes and Peeled Snacks Chimichurri Baked Pea Snacks as his tail and neck).

(Like I always say, I do a lot of this by taste… Once you start adding the powdered sugar, just add a little at a time until it’s a flavor that you enjoy)

If you don’t want to commit to a cheese ball, this also makes an awesome dip!

Once you’ve thoroughly drained–I’m talking smooshed down with paper towels to get all of the water out–drained your pineapple and chopped your ham and onions, add all of your ingredients except the powdered sugar to a large bowl. You can totally mix this by hand, but I prefer to use my hand mixer because it makes everything so much easier. Add the powdered sugar a little at a time until the desired flavor is reached.

Roll everything into a ball and wrap in parchment paper, throw in the refrigerator overnight. (You can also freeze this for about an hour or two–we just need it to set). Roll in pecans or nuts of choice and serve with your favorite crackers–we love using butter crackers and pea snacks!

I love this cheese ball and honestly I haven’t made another one since Caitlin shared this with me. So thank you, Cait! It’s such a nice mix of savory and sweet, which is my favorite combination.

  • Over the weekend, we worked as a family on our #BuildThanks Project. We teamed up with @LowesHomeImprovement and I would love for you guys to join us! #LowesPartner⠀
⠀
All you have to do is create a message of love, hope, encouragement, and thanks for the people in your community who are facing this crisis head on every single day.
This can be anyone from healthcare workers and first responders to grocery store clerks and your local mail carrier and package deliverers. Or all of the above! ⠀
It is super easy to do, using items you already have around your home! For us—that was art supplies because we have baskets overflowing with things line construction paper, crayons, markers, etc. ⠀
⠀
This is a great way to spend some quality time engaging with your kids and inspiring some creativity, all while being able to support and thank your local community (from inside) for all of the things that they’re doing for us during this time. ⠀

  • It’s the weekend! ⠀
⠀
You know what that means! ...#StayHome and #FlattenTheCurve. ⠀
⠀
▪️(Thank you to all of the essential workers around the country who don’t have this luxury and are depending on us to do what we can to help.) ▪️ It’s scary, I know.
It feels isolating, I know. ⠀
It’s frustrating, I know. ⠀
You are craving some normalcy, I know. ⠀
⠀
But look, the sooner we all fall in line and do the *one thing* we know can work and stop the fast spread of this virus, the sooner we can get back to our usual routines. ⠀
⠀
We are all in this together...⠀

  • ☣️ STOP ☣️⠀
⠀
We have to act NOW to save lives. Listen up.⠀
⠀
While panic is never preferable- if that's what it takes for you to stay home and slow the spread, then maybe you need to get scared. ⠀
⠀
People are exponentially spreading this disease with no symptoms. We have all GOT TO STAY HOME. No more lunch with the ladies. No more playground meetups. ⠀
⠀
STOP IT ALL IMMEDIATELY. SHUT IT ALL DOWN.⠀
⠀
There are otherwise healthy children and young adults on *limited supply* ventilators right now. This virus is brand new to the entire world and it is ravaging people's bodies in unexpected fatal ways- and no, not just the elderly or compromised.⠀
⠀
Math is math. We are already projected to run out of lifesaving equipment and supplies very quickly. ⠀
⠀
This is not media hype, this is not a hoax, this is real. It may be easy to forget that we are in the middle of a dangerous pandemic while the sun is out, traffic is light, and you are off work.⠀
⠀
There are no sirens going off or bombs exploding in your front yard, but I can promise you that we are in a very real crisis. However, we have SOME control.⠀
⠀
The longer we wait and the more we continue to socialize with each other and expose ourselves in public the longer we will be stuck in isolation, the longer people will be out of work, the longer our children won't have school, the longer our economy will suffer.⠀
⠀
Keep in mind that Wuhan did a very tight lockdown and they have STILL been quarantined for two months now and cannot lift the quarantine until they have gone 28 days without a new positive result. The US government has been very lax in comparison and this will not bode well for us if we don't do better NOW.⠀
⠀
This won't last forever, but our future WILL look a lot different based on the choices we make. ⠀
⠀
Just because the government did not force you to stay home or because your favorite restaurant, store or salon has chosen not to close does not mean you should leave your home.⠀
⠀
➡️*obviously this is intended for people who are VOLUNTARILY not staying home.*⬅️⠀
WORK. ESSENTIALS. HOME. THAT SHOULD BE IT!⠀
⠀
DO YOUR PART. ⠀
STAY HOME. ⠀
SAVE LIVES.⠀

  • Well. This wasn’t what I was going for today #creativeathomechallenge. It’s been pretty chilly haha...puns (don’t let that beautiful sky deceive you) and my plans to get a picnic together for lunch this afternoon were ruined. Maybe I can do that finally on back yard day 😂😂
Trying to support businesses and third party delivery services like Door Dash and their drivers—they now offer contact free deliveries, which is greatly appreciated to get a mild feeling of normalcy, one of my favorite dinners. It’s something small and easy that you can do if you’re able. Some of these DD drivers are relying solely on people to still order so that they can make money. #stayhome #flattenthecurve #slowthespread
